Tommy’s Express Car Wash Continues Expansion with Leadership Changes

National car wash brand Tommy’s Express has announced changes to its leadership team, promoting experienced leaders within the company who will continue to drive the company’s expansion across 4 divisions: Tommy Car Wash Systems, Tommy’s Express, and the newly formed Tommy’s Express Operations & Tommy’s Express Real Estate.

Alex Lemmen, formerly the company’s Chief Operating Officer, is now Chief Executive Officer. In addition, current Tommy’s President and co-founder Ryan Essenburg has also been named Chief Innovations Officer (CIO). With the addition of the CIO job role, Essenburg will lead the company’s increased focus on innovation and new products. These changes take effect immediately.

The newly announced Tommy’s Express Operations division reflects the success and rapid expansion of the company’s retail business. “We realize there is even more opportunity for us to grow even faster as our model continues to prove successful in many markets around the country,” said Essenburg. “To best manage that growth, we’ve added a real estate company that funds and develops sites, as well as an operating company that operates Tommy’s Express Car Wash locations.”

Tommy’s Express is a next-gen, high-efficiency national car wash franchise providing faster, safer, and more sophisticated car washing with affordable pricing and membership packages. Each highly recognizable location is equipped with an approximately 130’ dual belt conveyor system, soft cloth brushes, tire shine service, body wax, and a license plate recognition system for TommyClub members. Self-service interior vacuums, mat washers, and interior detail kits are available at all locations.

The Holland, MI-based company currently has 45 car wash locations, with over 230 future sites currently in development in the United States and abroad.

Tommy’s Express Enters 2020 as Top Car Wash Brand

The following is a January 17 2020 press release published by Tommy Car Wash System’s sister company and national car wash franchise Tommy’s Express Car Wash.

In late 2019 Tommy’s Express Car Wash was listed as the 15th best car wash brand in the “2019 Top 50 List of Conveyor Carwashes” report by Professional Carwashing & Detailing Magazine. This places Tommy’s Express high among the most successful operations and business models in the car wash industry after only three years of operation.

While the franchise may still be in its early days, the foundation supporting it has been long in the making. Originating with the first Quality Car Wash location in Holland, Michigan, the family of companies behind Tommy’s Express celebrated their 50 year anniversary in 2019 and includes world-record setting corporate locations, car wash site developer and equipment vendor Tommy Car Wash Systems, and systems provider Guardian Wash Command.

After its inaugural year in 2016, the Tommy’s Express franchise operated four locations, expanding to seven in 2017. Today, in January of 2020, that number has climbed to 29, with over 70 additional sites slated to open this year in markets across the United States.

According to company President Ryan Essenburg:

“2019 was our biggest year by far and there’s no slowing down ahead. But we’re ready and excited for everything that’s ahead.

With Tommy’s Express we set out to build and bring together, in-house, all the elements that a national car wash organization in 2020 needs to be successful, in a way that the industry has never had access to before. That’s our foundation. Our explosive growth proves that this approach is the right one for us, for our partners, and for the car wash industry.”

According to Alex Lemmen, Chief Operating Officer of Tommy’s Express:

“Right now in 2020 we are exactly where we want to be. We’ve redoubled our team, added a tremendous amount of warehouse and fulfillment capacity, and focused on developing each and every process that goes into building and supporting this organization. I can’t speak highly enough of this accomplishment or the many people who have contributed their time, talent, and energy to make it happen.

I’m also very proud of the WHY behind our corporate mission: Enriching Lives, Adding Value, and Serving Communities. While Tommy’s Express exists today in the right place and in the right time to become a national brand, establishing the largest and most advanced chain in the world, we will forever remain rooted in our calling to serve communities and all who interact with our brand in any capacity.”

In the Wash with the All-New Tommy RO

After a rigorous development and testing cycle, the brand new Tommy Reverse Osmosis system is hitting select car wash facilities and proving itself a sterling option for high production express car washes.

Like other RO systems the unit uses a powerful filtration system to produce purified water for use in spot free rinse service. However, unlike other systems the Tommy RO was developed to include amenities specific to car wash operation.

These include:

A suite of monitors providing advanced warning ahead of required maintenance or system faults

Proprietary solenoid system for strict 1 to 1 production of RO and Reject water

Automatic back-flow system to purge membranes, extending membrane lifespan to greatly reduce system operating costs

The system may be equipped with an onboard controller or integrated into the Tommy Controller for centralized command and control in a Totally Tommy tunnel. For more information please visit the Tommy Car Wash Systems webstore or contact a sales representative.

Remembering Sonny Essenburg

Jun (Left) and Sonny (Right) Essenburg

In 1969 Julius “Sonny” and Jacob “Jun” Essenburg opened the very first Quality Car Wash location here in Holland, MI. It wasn’t much to look at, compared to where we are today. But the brothers committed to the opportunity, devoting time, energy, and creativity to the process of washing cars and making improvements as they went.
